Janet B. McGill, MD, MA

Janet B. McGill, MD, MA, professor of medicine, is being recognized as a superb clinician in endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism.

McGill is described as a caring physician whose patients benefit from her outstanding clinical acumen, attention to detail, empathy and enthusiasm. She has been involved in the development of recently released American Association of Clinical Endocrinology diabetes treatment guidelines and shares her knowledge as an invited speaker nationally and internationally.

Her work as a clinical researcher includes contributions to the prevention of renal deterioration in patients with diabetes and to the search for new treatments for diabetes and its complications. She started her research career as a diabetologist for the landmark Diabetes Control and Complications Trial, and has been the PI for more than 200 clinical trials, including the NIH-sponsored GRADE study. She has contributed to the research community at Washington University School of Medicine by directing Volunteer for Health until 2005 and co-directing the Prevention and Control Core of the Diabetes Research and Training Center until 2012.

McGill is highly valued as a teacher and mentor who takes time to teach students, house staff, fellows and faculty. She has been the director of the fellowship in endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism since 2009.

McGill earned her bachelor’s degree at the University of Michigan in 1972, her medical degree from Michigan State University in 1979 and a master’s degree from Northern Michigan University in 1980. She completed residency training at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Mich., and clinical fellowships at Henry Ford Hospital and Washington University. She is a fellow of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists and has been named in Best Doctors in America since 1998.
