C. James Holliman, MD

C. James (Jim) Holliman, MD ’79, Professor of Emergency Medicine at M. S. Hershey Medical Center of Penn State University and adjunct Professor of Emergency Medicine at George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, is an international leader in the area of emergency medicine education and clinical care.

Holliman has devoted his long and distinguished career to the development of the field of emergency medicine throughout the world. His career began with several years spent in Utah as an emergency medicine physician. He moved to Pennsylvania in 1985 and four years later joined the faculty of Penn State University’s Hershey Medical Center, where he served as clinical director of the Center for Emergency Medicine Education. He served as associate emergency medicine residency director for 14 years at Hershey.

In 1994, he started and became the founding director of Hershey’s Center for International Emergency Medicine, which operated a fellowship program dedicated to training burgeoning international leaders of emergency medicine. Many of the program’s graduates are now leaders in emergency medicine care, training and research in their home countries. Through his work at the center, Holliman has played a leading role in establishing emergency medicine residency training programs in more than 40 nations.

In 2008 Holliman joined the faculty of George Washington University and also became Professor of Military and Emergency Medicine with the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD. In this role, he was deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan to develop an emergency health care system and to train corpsmen and physicians in first response, battlefield extrication and emergency care. He also carried out military training in other Middle Eastern nations, Eastern Europe, Latin America, and Asia.

Holliman has been honored by the American College of Emergency Physicians and by emergency medicine societies in several nations, including Slovenia, Turkey and Poland. He is currently president-elect of the International Federation for Emergency Medicine.

He received his bachelor’s degree from Duke University in 1975 and his medical degree from Washington University in 1979. He completed his medical training with a surgical residency and a burn research fellowship at the University of Utah.
