Career Opportunities
Employment opportunities at the School of Medicine span a wide
range of descriptions. Generally, they may be associated with one
part of the schools three part mission: teaching, research,
or patient care.
More specifically, they fall into several classifications:
Computer
Computer professionals at the school perform programming and data
analysis; they create and maintain computer networks, and they serve
as system managers. The School of Medicine is highly computerized,
utilizing a wide variety of hardware and operating systems.
Accounting
Responsible positions are often available in accounts payable, purchasing,
payroll, financial management, financial analysis and similar endeavors.
The schools annual budget of more than $500 million is managed
with extreme precision.
Management
Management positions are responsible for administering and budgeting
grants; preparing financial reports; performing strategic, business
and financial plans; coordinating work-flow and supervising staff.
Research
Technicians and technologists active in the schools 1,000-plus
research investigations analyze data, prepare and perform experiments,
maintain laboratory equipment, and assist in the preparation of
publications.
Insurance and Billing
Employees working in this field may post payments, follow-up on
bills, process insurance claims, register patients and schedule
appointments. They often have direct contact with patients, interviewing
them, answering their questions and entering their information.
Clerical
Outside of the insurance and billing field, the School of Medicine
employs many people as clerks and record-keepers. Jobs in this group
may include data entry; gathering patient information; compiling
records and charts; typing forms, memos and correspondence, and
more specialized work with medical records.
Patient Care
Although the School of Medicine is not a hospital, it does provide
patient services in clinics and clinical laboratories. Medical technicians,
medical technologists and clinical laboratory technologists work
in clinical laboratories. Nurses here care for patients in clinics,
coordinate clinical research and perform other specialized tasks.
Secretarial
Secretarial staff organize, manage and provide support for clinical,
research and business offices of the Medical School. They file,
take dictation, transcribe notes and generate correspondence, among
many other duties.
Service
Service personnel keep the School of Medicine running smoothly.
Among the job descriptions are animal caretaker, custodian, security
officer, shipping and receiving clerk, and environmental technician.
Skilled carpenters, electricians painters, plumbers and other tradespeople
are sometimes needed.
